Md. delegates push referendum on tuition breaks for illegal immigrants

A pair of Republican Maryland lawmakers will lead the push for a voter referendum on allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition.

Del. Neil Parrott, R-Washington County, will start the petition drive  with Del. Pat McDonough, R-Baltimore County.

Critics say granting the tuition breaks violates federal law at a time when the cash-strapped state can ill-afford to lose millions of dollars.

Gov. Martin O’Malley has said he will sign the bill, recently approved by the Maryland General Assembly.
