President Trump Tuesday urged caution on gun control and suggested it was perilous to deal on the issue with Democrats, who he said would abandon the Second Amendment if they had the chance.
“I think the Republicans are very unified. We are very strong on our Second Amendment,” Trump told reporters Tuesday during an appearance in the Oval Office with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis. “The Democrats are not strong at all on the Second Amendment. I would say they are weak on the Second Amendment. And we have to be careful of that. The Democrats would, I believe, I think they’d give up the Second Amendment.”
Trump noted that his voters are strong backers of gun rights. “A lot of the people that put me where I am are strong believers in the Second Amendment. And I am also,” he said.
He addressed the prospect of gun control, saying, “We have to be very careful about that. You know, they call it the ‘slippery slope.’ And all of the sudden everything gets taken away. We’re not going to let that happen.”
