Fort Hood soldier collapses, becoming base’s 28th death in 2020

Another soldier at Texas’s Fort Hood has died, the 28th person to die at the military base in 2020.

Pvt. Corlton Chee, 25, died on Wednesday surrounded by his family after collapsing during a training exercise days earlier, according to the Associated Press, which cited data from Fort Hood officials. The announcement of the incident came Friday.

The circumstances of Chee’s death are still under investigation.

His passing comes after a series of mysterious deaths of soldiers on the base. This includes the case of Vanessa Guillen, who disappeared after telling her family she was sexually harassed. Her dismembered body was found days later. Fellow soldier Spc. Aaron Robinson is alleged to have killed her. He killed himself soon after.

Of those 28 deaths, according to the Daily Mail, eight are considered accidents, six are considered suicides, five are considered homicides, two were from illness, one was in combat, and the causes of six are, so far, undetermined.

Chee’s death was on the same day as the welcoming of Maj. Gen. John Richardson IV as the base’s new commander. Deputy Commanding Gen. Scott Efflandt was removed from the position Tuesday.

Richardson said on Wednesday, “Trust is strong in the army, but we have individual instances where they trust is broken, and one break in that link is one too many.”
