Hillary Clinton has a new ad featuring a minister whose wife was slain during the Charleston, S.C. massacre two weeks before the Palmetto State primary.
In the ad, “Standing,” Rev. Anthony Thompson makes the case that Clinton is the best choice for president because she is “standing with the president to get stronger gun laws so no family has to go through anything like this again.”
Gunman Dylann Roof murdered nine people, all black, attending a prayer meeting at a historically African-American Charleston church.
The emotional ad highlights the importance of gun safety legislation and Clinton’s history of working for stricter gun control laws. Reverend Thompson’s children, Kevin Singleton and Denise Quarles, have also endorsed Clinton and recently shared their story on her campaign website.
The ad will begin airing statewide in South Carolina this weekend just two weeks before the state’s January 27th primary. The former secretary of sate currently has a large lead over Bernie Sanders in South Carolina, with the most recent polls showing her surpassing him by 40 points, largely on the strength of the African-American vote.
