Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is recovering from a surgery to fix a broken bone, a department spokeswoman said.
DeVos, who broke the bone during a road biking accident, is expected to make a full recovery from the Thursday surgery, spokeswoman Liz Hill said.
The secretary, who had no events or appearances listed on her public schedule for this week, was expected to rest at home. DeVos splits her time between Washington, D.C., and her home state of Michigan, according to the Associated Press.
“Secretary DeVos will remain in daily contact with the Department during this period,” Hill said.
A schedule for next week has not yet been released.
While the federal government is in a partial shutdown because of a stalemate between President Trump and congressional Democrats over more than $5 billion in appropriations for a border wall, funding for the Education Department through Sept. 30, 2019 was part of a spending bill signed by Trump last September.
