Winstead: Al Franken misses swearing

Comedian, author and “Daily Show” co-creator Lizz Winstead stopped at the National Press Club Thursday night to talk about her new-ish book “Lizz Free or Die,” but beforehand she revealed that she spent some time on Capitol Hill with another funny person, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. “Today I actually got to walk with him to the Senate, he was presiding over the Senate, and I never did that before. It was fun,” she told her audience. “A walk with Al, and him saying, ‘ahhh, you’re so lucky that you still get to swear in public,’ and I was like, ‘I know, you made the choice dude, you made the choice.’ ”

Winstead, who splits her time between writing and performing comedy, then showcased a bit of her stand-up chops. “At least you recognize you made the choice, some don’t. Anthony Weiner didn’t realize once you are elected you can’t text pictures … that’s like a rule,” she said to laughs. “Some staffer should say, ‘here’s the thing now, there’s no more of that, if you were doing that,’ maybe your staffer wouldn’t know, or maybe that’s why they’re called a staffer — that was a bad pun,” she grinned shaking her head.

She also said she was excited about this election cycle because of all the money in politics. “What’s good for comedy is always bad for democracy, you know that?” she said.
