Former Rep. Gabby Giffords said her heart is with her former colleagues and others after the shooting during the Republicans’ congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning.

“My heart is with my former colleagues, their families & staff, and the US Capitol Police- public servants and heroes today and every day,” Giffords tweeted.
In a statement released through her gun violence prevention organization, Americans for Responsible Solution, Giffords also said Wednesday’s shooting was “an attack on all who serve and on all who participate in our democracy.”
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or a Republican, nor if you’re a senator or a representative, nor a staffer or a sworn officer. If you serve the institution of Congress, you’re connected to your colleagues, current and former, by a shared sense of service to ideals far greater than yourself,” Giffords said. “This shooting is an attack on all who serve and on all who participate in our democracy.”
Giffords, like many others, went on to praise the actions of the Capitol Police who stepped in and engaged with the gunman.
“I am thankful for the great courage of the Capitol Police, who were my protectors after I was shot and became my friends,” she said.
Giffords and 18 others were shot at a constituent event in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011. Six people died. Giffords was shot in the head and later resigned from Congress to focus on her recovery.
