House Democrat arrested with hundreds of people protesting family detention

Hundreds of activists and a Democratic congresswoman were arrested on Capitol Hill Thursday after wrapping themselves in mylar blankets in the Hart Senate building, to protest the separation of illegal immigrant families once they enter the U.S.

The group was organized by Women’s March organizer Linda Sarsour.

“630 women in foil blankets are being arrested in Hart Office building now as they chant ‘Abolish ICE’ and demand an end to family detention,” the Women’s March tweeted.

Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth, Ed Markey, and Rep. Pramila Jayapal all stopped in to show their support of the protest.

Rep. Jayapal tweeted Thursday that she was among more than 500 who were arrested in the Senate building.

Linda Sarsour organized the event on Thursday even though President Trump signed an executive order last week aimed at ending the family separations, a controversial practice that was a byproduct of his “zero tolerance” immigration policy.
