Pompeo speaks with Russian foreign minister about election security and Afghanistan

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday, the department said.

A statement informing the press of the call included few details about what specifically was said. It did, however, mention that the two discussed Afghanistan, election security, and convening the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council for the U.N.’s 75th anniversary.

The call comes amid reports that Russia paid Taliban operatives to kill American soldiers in Afghanistan. President Trump and his administration have denied that he was briefed on the issue.

In 2016, Russian actors attempted to influence the U.S. presidential election through social media. Concerns have mounted as to what Russian forces may try in this year’s election cycle.
