A man handling a propane tank in a Hampden row house sparked an explosion today that knocked down a wall, sending himself and four children to the hospital.
“We don’t know exactly what he was trying to do,” said Baltimore City fire spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright.
The blast occurred around 3 p.m. in the 3400 block of Hickory Avenue. It knocked down a wall into an adjacent row house, causing the wall to collapse on four children, Cartwright said.
The children did not suffer serious injures, but the man, identified only as a 48-year-old male, suffered second-degree burns described as “serious.”
The building will likely be condemned, but there is no immediate danger to the public, Cartwright said.
