An 18-year-old Maryland resident remained in critical but stable condition Sunday afternoon, a day after he apparently shot himself in the head after being involved in a fatal crash in Frederick County that killed a friend.
Authorities were called to a crash site in Thurmont near Maryland’s border with Pennsylvania just before 2 a.m. Saturday and found the body of Brandon E. Herbert in the road. It appeared the 18-year-old had been killed in a crash but no vehicle was nearby, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators learned he had been with a friend, Seth B. Fisher. At Fisher’s home, authorities said they found a damaged Toyota truck.
Inside the home, they found Fisher with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
He was flown to a R. Adams Crowley Shock Trauma center in Baltimore, where a hospital spokewoman said he was in stable but critical condition as of 2:50 p.m. Sunday.
