3 Anne Arundel schools to get turf

North County, Arundel and Annapolis high schools will be the first to get turf fields next summer, but the Anne Arundel school board could not agree on when the remaining eight schools should have their turf fields installed.

Although the board was undecided this week, all fields are expected to have turf by the winter of 2010-11.

“The intent would be to finish six [fields at six schools] in the first year,” Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said.

Officials said fields could take six to eight weeks to install.

The board also approved the schedule that will be used by the county Department of Recreation and Parks and the schools for sharing the fields.

“The field is used almost 24/7,” said Broadneck High School Athletic Director Ken Kazmarek, whose school has turf.

“It?s very, very difficult and complex to schedule.”

However, scheduling with renters and others has been going well so far, he said.

To protect the investment, the school board approved the installation of a wireless security camera system at Broadneck High?s stadium.

It was donated by LenSec LLC, the school system?s surveillance provider.
