Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell next week will join four other Republican governors – all of whom have presidential ambitions – on a five-state, “Remember November” campaign tour aimed boosting GOP control at the state level.
The Republican Governors Association-backed tour, which will crisscross key presidential states like Iowa and New Hampshire, includes Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, the group’s chairman; Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, the RGA’s vice chairman; Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal; and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. All have been mentioned as possible GOP presidential contenders in 2012.
“This campaign season has become a battle between rhetoric and reality,” said RGA Communications Director Mike Schrimpf. “To distract from their failed economic record and ideas, Democrats nationally are repeating the same old, unfounded charges about Republican candidates that they used last year against Governors Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell.”
