Millions of young Americans lined up to support Sen. Bernie Sanders for president in 2016 after he promised to make college tuition free and to forgive large amounts of student loans. Now, with the same goals in mind, a free smart phone app is paying students loan debt off via the free market.
One Indiana man has the burden of student loan debt behind him, just by playing a trivia game. Last week, Jordan Shelton, a recent graduate of the Manhattan Christian College, was handed a check for $33,407 to pay the remaining balance on his student loan off.
He is not alone. The new app is designed to ease the burden of crippling student loan debt by helping to pay it off.
Givling is a trivia game app is free to download and play. So far, it has paid out nearly $600,000 to its users. The loans are paid off through advertisements and optional purchases of more games.
Once you download the game, you get two free trivia match ups each day, and you play until you ‘strike out.’ After your second free game, you can either pay to play more or click on suggested advertisements for additional free games. When users play more games, they accumulate points as they receive more points players get selected to the “live funding queue.”
The live funding queue allows users to compete for the daily cash prizes and the large student loan prize. In the trivia rounds, players are paired up with two other users working together on a team. The team’s score competes with others, and at the end of the day, the highest scoring team receives cash rewards.
Givling is a for-profit app that uses 90 percent of its profit to pay off its users’ student loans or mortgages while using 10 percent of its profits to pay its staff.
The mission for the app is to help those who are facing the student debt crisis, which is leaving graduates with an average of almost $40,000 in student loan debt.
