Former Republican New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman partly hopes the “crazies” in her party win in the midterm elections, she said on Wednesday.
Whitman was referring to far-right GOP candidates who are competing in midterm elections this year. The former governor added that she also did not want those candidates to win in fear of “the damage they can do” for the world she and her grandchildren live in, according to Axios.
“If it goes the way that it looks like it might, with Republicans taking control of the House and hopefully not the Senate, but there’s a possibility of that, it’s going to be a rough two years,” Whitman said. “But it will also give us an opening to really let people know what a difference elections make, how important it is to vote, and to consider those candidates and to understand what they mean for the future and policymaking.”

Whitman also said that she believes the Republican Party no longer exists, that it is now a “cult,” and that “there’s no set of central principles” that the party is based on. While Whitman is still a registered Republican, she votes independent and has worked with former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang to establish the Forward Party to give voters an alternative to the two-party system, she said.
Whitman’s comments come as numerous candidates for the Republican Party, including J.D. Vance for the Ohio Senate and Blake Masters for the Arizona Senate, are competing to help the GOP flip the House of Representatives and the Senate, both of which have a Democratic majority. Republicans are predicted to take control of the House, while the Senate is currently in a dead heat, according to FiveThirtyEight.
The former governor has been critical of former President Donald Trump and his unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen, saying that the 2020 election was “safe, secure, and accurate” and that there is “no denying that.” On Friday, Whitman criticized GOP gubernatorial candidates Tudor Dixon for Michigan and Kari Lake for Arizona on social media, saying that the latter candidate is “not fit to be governor.”

When asked who she would like to see as president in 2024, Whitman said she has not thought about that “because that’s not where we are.” The former governor also did not give a direct answer on whether she thought President Joe Biden was doing a good job as president but did say she did not want him to run for reelection, citing his age as her reason.
