The 3-minute interview: Annie Hudson

Annie Hudson, 17, a Wilde Lake High School senior who is in a mentoring program, has been interning at the office of Del. Elizabeth Bobo, D-District 12B, this legislative session.

Hudson is the first high school student to have an internship with Bobo, who usually has only college students assist her. Bobo calls Hudson a delight and an encouraging example of a hard-working high school student who showed remarkable enthusiasm and initiative.

What are some of your duties?

It?s a variety of things. It?s going to the legislative sessions, answering the phones, talking to lobbyists and talking to constituents. Basically, you get to be in the middle of things.

How are your days set up?

I get in the office at 9 and leave at 5. It?s in Annapolis, so I leave at 8 and get home at 6. It?s actually a pretty long workday if you?re not used to it. I get school credit and a small stipend.

What do you hope to gain from this internship?

The main thing is experience. And it helps a lot with college, especially if I do anything with politics. It all seemed sugar-coated and you hear all these horror stories, but it?s actually been all right. It?s actually pretty cool because I?m in [Bobo?s] district and get to vote for her.

What are your career aspirations?

I definitely want to do something in international diplomacy. I lived in Germany for eight years. I was born there. I lived there for four years, came back here and then went back when I was 8 to 12, when I went to a German school.
