The first family’s trip in Martha’s Vineyard is over, ending on a more melancholy tone than it began.
Rather than spending his final night in town on a fancy date night with his wife Michelle, President Barack Obama and the first lady traveled back from the funeral of Sen. Edward Kennedy. Matching the mood, they returned to torrential rain from Tropical Storm Danny.
The cloudy and rainy weather that continued Sunday led to some indoor activities like taking his daughters Malia, Sasha and their cousin Suhalia Ng to do some souvenir shopping at Alley’s General Store in the village of West Tisby near their vacation home.
He left with some astronaut ice cream and Nerds candy totally just under $5; AP reports the store clerk was left with a $15 tip as Obama refused change from his $20 bill. But not everyone is claiming he’s that generous. TMZ spoke with the clerk who asked, “what tip?” and said Obama accepted the change.
Obama and the girls then headed across the street to Garcia’s Deli and Bakery where he picked up a chocolate chip cookie and posed for pictures with employees.
The first family left Martha’s Vineyard Sunday afternoon and plan to spend some more vacation days this week at their Camp David retreat before the girls go back to school Sept. 8.
