Sarah Sanders: Republicans must ‘stand up’ to James Comey

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called on Republicans to “stand up” to former FBI Director James Comey Monday night as she defended President Trump’s decision to fire Comey in 2017.

“Republicans should stand up to Comey and his tremendous corruption – from the fake Hillary Clinton investigation, to lying and leaking, to FISA abuse, and a list too long to name,” Sanders tweeted. “The President did the country a service by firing him and exposing him for the shameless fraud he is.”

Comey slammed Republicans on Monday after he appeared before the House Judiciary and House Oversight committees in the panels’ ongoing examination of the FBI and Justice Department’s management of the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails, as well as the investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. He also accused President Trump of “lying about the FBI, attacking the FBI, and attacking the rule of law in this country.”

“Republicans used to understand that the actions of a president matter,” Comey told reporters Monday. “The words of a president matter, the rule of law matters, and the truth matters. Where are those Republicans today?”

Comey, who was fired by Trump in May 2017, also appeared before House lawmakers earlier this month and fielded questions related to the so-called “Trump dossier,” which contains salacious and unverified information about Trump’s ties to Russia.

Comey said that Monday’s interview was “another day of Hillary Clinton’s emails and the Steele dossier.” A transcript of the testimony is expected to be released at some point on Tuesday.
