Commerce building to get a $550M makeover

The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded a contract to Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. of Pasadena to do a $550 million modernization of its headquarters downtown.

The Herbert C. Hoover Department of Commerce building has stood on Constitution Avenue since 1932, when it was the largest office building in the world, according to the National Register of Historic Places. The renovations will take place in multiple phases over 14 years, while the building will remain occupied.

Around 1.85 million square feet of office space will be replaced during the upgrades.
