Former FBI Director James Comey on Sunday implored Republicans to defend the FBI amid President Trump’s attack on his former fixer, Michael Cohen.
Trump excoriated the FBI’s treatment of Cohen in a tweet Sunday morning, saying the bureau raiding the one-time Trump Organization attorney’s office “was absolutely unthinkable” and “unheard of.” Trump also called Cohen a “rat.”
“This is from the President of our country, lying about the lawful execution of a search warrant issued by a federal judge. Shame on Republicans who don’t speak up at this moment — for the FBI, the rule of law, and the truth,” Comey responded.

The FBI raided Cohen’s office and hotel room in New York in April, seizing records related to Trump. Cohen on Wednesday was sentenced to three years in prison for bank and tax fraud crimes, including campaign finance violations for payments made to women alleging they had affairs with Trump.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, nominated to that office by Trump, signed off on the warrant to raid Cohen’s office, The New York Times reported in April.
