President Obama’s campaign mocked Mitt Romney’s past political connections to Joseph Arpaio, the Arizona sheriff who stoked birtherist conspiracy theories today by announcing that an investigation uncovered “probable cause” for believing that Obama’s birth certificate is fake.
“Still want it?” tweeted Obama’s campaign press secretary, Ben LaBolt. “Romney has called Arpaio for his endorsement, his aides called “weekly” and Arpaio was his honorary Chair in 08.”
LaBolt also took a moment to mock Arpaio by tweeting a link to the “live feed of Sheriff Arpaio’s press conference” that actually directed viewers to a youtube video of the X-Files opening.
Arpaio might have generated some campaign donations for the Democrats as well, as LaBolt tweeted “Birth certificate available here,” with a link to a mug depicting the birth certificate, sold by the Democratic National Committee.
