Comedian David Spade ripped President Obama and his wife as too “thirsty” to appear on television in a clip that went viral Sunday evening.
“A president should have a little more dignity,” Spade told TMZ, referring to Obama’s recent appearance on an episode of “Running Wild with Bear Grylls.”
Spade himself appears thirsty for media attention to promote low budget fare like his recent “Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser,” and it was not clear how serious the comedian was in his critique, but the take delighted Obama critics.
“I mean, I realize that Woodrow Wilson went on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ once, but what president’s doing reality shows?” Spade joked. “It just sounds weird to me, you know, it’s just too much.”
The former Saturday Night Live cast member cited Obama’s appearance last month on the cover the GQ Magazine.
“Leave that to Bradley Cooper,” Spade said. “You don’t need to go — the president, you’re above all of us, you’re above stars, you’re above everything. When he’s trying to get in the mix, like, ‘I want to present at the MTV Awards.’ All right guy, you got it, relax.”
Spade suggested the Obamas are working to beef up their celebrity for their post-White House years.
“I think that Michelle Obama’s on ‘Ellen’ more than I am,” he said. “It’s just a new world. It seems a bit thirsty to me.”
