Baltimore cop charged with murder

An off-duty Baltimore police officer who authorities said fatally shot his girlfriend and then was in a hours-long standoff with his police colleagues has been charged with first-degree murder. James Smith, a 20-year police veteran, shot Kendra Diggs on Tuesday afternoon and then barricaded himself in a Baltimore home, authorities said. His 4-year-old son left the home during the standoff, which ended with Smith’s surrender.
