Nearly one-third of people who have diabetes don?t even know they have the disease, and the Maryland chapter of the American Diabetes Association wants that to change.
The group designated Tuesday as American Diabetes Alert Day to remind those at risk for type 2 diabetes to take a risk test. The seven-question test can be administered over the phone at 800-342-2383 or online at diabetes.org/risktest.
Diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States, affecting nearly 300,000 Marylanders. Those at risk for type 2 diabetes may be overweight, sedentary, over 45 or have a family history of diabetes.
More than 1 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
