All aboard, Amtrak, even gunslingers

Coming soon to a train near you: Guns!

Amtrak says it will allow unloaded firearms in checked baggage on trains starting Dec. 15.

But gun-toting riders need to make a reservation for the weapons at least 24 hours in advance, according to the train service.

Amtrak is allowing the guns to comply with a law enacted by Congress in December 2009. The system has modified 142 baggage cars and installed secure storage areas at stations to meet the requirement.

The firearms must be unloaded and locked into hard-sided containers specially approved by Amtrak. The passenger must have the only key to said bag.

Big guns – rifles, shotguns and the like – need to be checked into secure areas of the trains.
