New York City has nudged past Los Angeles to become “America’s worst sanctuary city,” according to a new list from a top immigration reform organization.
Pro-illegal immigrant policies put into place by former liberal Mayor Bill deBlasio and supercharged by new Mayor Eric Adams, also a Democrat, have helped to elevate the city’s status, according to the Immigration Reform Law Institute.
“The Big Apple was the second-worst sanctuary community in IRLI’s last such ranking in 2019. Since then, the city has doubled down on its dangerous sanctuary policies to earn the shameful top position,” said the new listing provided to Secrets this morning.
The Immigration Reform Law Institute list:
1. New York City, New York
2. Los Angeles, California
3. Chicago, Illinois
4. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
5. San Francisco, California
6. Minneapolis, Minnesota
7. Seattle, Washington
8. Wake County, North Carolina
9. Middlesex County, New Jersey
10. Portland, Oregon
New York and other big cities have seen a new surge in illegal migration thanks to governors and mayors in Texas and Arizona who have started to bus migrants to sanctuary cities.
Adams and some other mayors, notably Washington’s Muriel Bowser, are fighting to keep the migrants out as they face an economic and humanitarian crisis with the increased population caused by their policies.
“These communities have earned their places on this list because of incredibly poor leadership at the city, county, and state levels,” said Dale Wilcox, the institute’s executive director and general counsel. “Data overwhelmingly shows that sanctuary policies lead to more crime, fear, and death. The leaders of these communities should not escape accountability for the damage they have caused. Their residents deserve much more.”
Tom Homan, the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement who is now with IRLI, added that the influx is likely to boost crime.
“Sanctuary policies only provide sanctuary to criminals, not to immigrant communities,” he said. “Immigrant communities don’t want criminals in their neighborhoods either. Victims and witnesses of crime don’t want the offender back in their communities to seek revenge. All communities deserve protection from criminals, but sanctuary policies put immigrant communities at greater risk of crime.”
