PHILADELPHIA — Sen. Al Franken on Monday mocked Donald Trump’s business career and called him a “right-wing megolomaniac” during a speech to the Democratic convention.
The Minnesotan and former comedian took aim at the Republican nominee’s Trump University real estate seminar that has been the subject of lawsuit for fraudulent businesss practices.
Trump regularly brags about his wealth and success as a real estate developer and reality television star. The Democrats have made undermining Trump’s image as wealthy, can-do businessman a central part of their strategy to win in November.
“I’m Al Franken, Minnesota Senator, and world-renowned expert on right-wing megalomaniacs: Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and now Donald Trump,” Franken said, according to a transcript of his prepared remarks. “I got my doctorate in megalomania studies from Trump University.”
Franken spoke on the first night of the Democratic convention. Hillary Clinton is set to formally accept the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday.
