A Pennsylvania lawmaker said that the coronavirus pandemic is God’s punishment on the country for its “presumptuous sins.”
Pennsylvania state Rep. Stephanie Borowicz filed a nonbinding resolution on Monday to designate March 30 as a “State Day of Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer,” likening the “punishment” of the COVID-19 pandemic to the Civil War.
“Whereas, Insomuch as we know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals are subjected to punishments and chastisement in this world,” the resolution reads.
“And whereas, May we not justly fear that the awful calamity of the pandemic, which now desolates this Commonwealth may be but a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people?”
Borowicz cited President Abraham Lincoln’s designation of April 30, 1863, as a similar commemorative day during the Civil War. Additionally, she alluded to Lincoln’s speculation during his second inaugural address that the Civil War was a divine punishment for slavery.
