Fashion Fights Poverty Dress Responsibly Gala at Artisphere, Saturday

The nonprofit Fashion Fights Poverty has done the remarkable by taking poverty and environmental issues and making them, well, fashionable.

For seven years, FFP has tackled these topics head-on, promoting issues such as fair trade and sustainability. On Saturday the organization holds its annual Dress Responsibly Gala.

“It’s thinking differently about how to alleviate poverty,” said Yvette Castro, vice president of research and programs at Fashion Fights Poverty.

Partygoers will enjoy a cocktail reception, runway show, dance performances, a silent auction and a live exhibition.

Proceeds from the gala will go to FFP programs such as the Woodrow Wilson High School Clothing & Textile Program, a summer fashion camp and a vocational internship and mentoring program.

Local and international designers will be present, emphasizing the values of both supporting area artists while also making responsible choices on the national and international level. These designers include “Project Runway” Season 7 winner Seth Aaron Henderson, as well as locals Laura Williams and Ginger Root.

Castro said FFP tries to offer a balance.

“We have some amazing designers,” she said. “Every year we have some amazing designers.”

Now this is like pairing chocolate and peanut butter. So good. IMDB users named 1990’s “Troll 2” the worst movie ever made. Though, to be fair, it’s probably the best film about goblins that turn humans into vegetables before eating them. Michael Paul Stephenson, who starred in the movie as a child, filmed a documentary titled “Best Worst Movie” exploring the cult phenomenon of “Troll 2.” Catch both films at AFI, with actor George Hardy live via Skype.
