The finalists for The College of William & Mary’s new mascot include mythical creatures and royalty.
The five finalists announced Tuesday are a griffin, king and queen, phoenix, pug and wren.
Drawings of each finalist are posted on the Web site www.wm.edu/mascot, along with a survey seeking feedback. The deadline for submitting the survey is Jan. 7.
The school says it received more than 800 mascot suggestions.
William & Mary for decades was known as the Indians. The school changed its nickname to Tribe in the 1980s.
In 2006, the NCAA ruled that the college could keep the Tribe nickname but its feathered logo was demeaning to Native Americans and had to go.
William & Mary’s athletic teams will still be called the Tribe.
