Rudy Giuliani calls for investigation into genesis of Russia investigation

Rudy Giuliani, one of President Trump’s personal attorneys, said Sunday the events leading up to the Justice Department’s appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller should be investigated.

“I believe that the Mueller investigation should be investigated, not because necessarily of Mueller, but because of its genesis in this, very, very now, completely, almost illegal and unethical probe, this Russia probe,” Giuliani said during an interview on CNN’s “State of Union.”

But Giuliani stopped short of demanding that another special counsel be named.

“No, I’m saying the Justice Department should do it,” he said.

Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and whether Trump obstructed justice after Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey.

A report from DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz released Thursday found former Comey was “insubordinate” and “affirmatively concealed” his intentions about the bureau’s Hillary Clinton email investigation from Justice Department leadership.

But Horowitz also found that there was no bias or improper motivations fueling the probe, instead describing “tensions” and “disagreements” within the ranks.
