Officials have identified the military veteran who was fatally struck Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run in Arlington.
The victim, 62-year-old Robert Shepard, of Lawrence, Mass., had been reported missing and endangered by a girlfriend on June 29, according to the Arlington County Police Department.
The incident occurred in the southbound lanes of Route 110 near Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon. Shepard was struck by a vehicle and thrown about 60 feet, Arlington police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.
About 5:35 a.m. Tuesday, 911 dispatchers received a call about a pedestrian lying on the sidewalk in front of a vehicle, Sternbeck said. When officers arrived at the scene, the striking vehicle had left.
The vehicle and the suspect have yet to be identified, and police are continuing to investigate the incident.
