Talking Points: June 29

Who is the nation’s biggest campaign contributor?

For the moment, that distinction belongs to billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam, of Las Vegas, who so far have invested $25 million in Republican presidential campaigns through super-PACs, committees that can accept unlimited contributions, according to CNNMoney. Adelson gave $15 million to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and has given $10 million so far to Mitt Romney. He may spend $100 million this year, CNNMoney reports.

What are Beltway Express Lanes?

The Interstate 495 Express Lanes, set to open on the Virginia side of the Capital Beltway later this year, will offer commuters on Interstate 495 a less congested drive, but at a price. Drivers will be able to travel for free in the regular lanes, or they can pay a toll and ride in the Express Lanes. The toll will vary based on traffic. Cars with three or more riders can use the Express Lanes for free. All cars must have electronic E-ZPass transponders.

Is is safe to go fishing around the District?

Yes, it’s safe to fish. Eating those fish? Not so much. Anglers are encouraged to catch and release fish from the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, two waterways that several environmental organizations still rank among the nation’s most endangered. Toxins in the water mean fish caught in D.C. rivers may have high levels of mercury, which is especially dangerous to women and children.

How hot is it?

It’s so hot that more than 1,000 temperature records were broken around the country over the past seven days. And it’s still only June. The oppressive heat has been more than an inconvenience. High temperatures and gusting winds are fueling monster wildfires in parts of the Rocky Mountains. Still ahead: July and August.
