Trump cheers safety at G-20 ‘despite the anarchists’

President Trump applauded the security forces at the G-20 summit, which wrapped up Saturday in Hamburg, Germany, after police arrested dozens of protesters.

“Law enforcement & military did a spectacular job in Hamburg,” he tweeted on Saturday as he left Germany. “Everybody felt totally safe despite the anarchists.”

Trump also tweeted plaudits to German Chancellor Angela Merkel for hosting the summit, which he said was “carried out beautifully.”

The G-20 summit occurred against a backdrop of thousands of protesters, some of which lit bonfires and looted shops in the streets of the German city, according to multiple news reports.

Police were able to quell the protests with tear gas, water cannons, and firing off flash-bang grenades,

Hamburg police noted that 197 officers were injured since Thursday and at least 83 people were arrested.
