Trump admits preference for ‘elegant’ press releases over tweets

Former President Donald Trump has grown rather fond of press releases as a way to communicate with voters.

During a July 2021 Zoom call with Princeton historian Julian Zelizer, released by the Atlantic on Monday, Trump expressed a strong liking for the communication tool he uses. Although Trump is still unhappy about being kicked off Twitter after the Jan. 6 riots, he had high praise for the format.

“No. 1, it’s far more elegant,” Trump told Zelizer and other historians during the Zoom call. “And No. 2, I have — you know, I don’t have — I’m not … I’m not stopped by the number of characters. Which is a good thing, actually.”

Trump said he’s had a lot of success with the new platform: “I went to a system of press releases, and we’re getting tremendous traction on those press releases, tremendous.” He then went on to claim that he was doing something unique in sending them out. “You know, it’s a very unusual thing. It only works for me. It wouldn’t work for somebody, would do a press release, everyone’s going to say, what’s this all about?”

Trump was initially banned from Twitter on Jan. 8, 2021, due to the “risk of further incitement of violence” after the Jan. 6 riots.

Trump has attempted to circumvent Twitter and its Big Tech companions’ bans for more than a year. He tried to launch a “communication platform” in May 2021 that operated as a blog. The site barely lasted a month before Trump’s team shut it down due to low activity. He later announced his Twitter clone Truth Social in October 2021, with the website launching its iOS app in February 2021. The former president has not posted on Truth Social since its launch.

Trump has regularly made political endorsements and comments on current events through his press releases since the platform’s inception. In an April 2021 Fox News interview, Trump claimed that Twitter is a “failed concept” that is “very boring” without him.
