Domino’s releases new “DomiCopter” pizza delivery drone

Even though Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) spent 13 hours filibustering over the issue of drone use, it’s doubtful that even he would be opposed to Domino’s new pizza delivery DomiCopter.

The days of the slow-moving and sweaty pizza delivery boys are long gone now that Domino’s Pizza has hired a creative agency in order to figure out a more innovative way to get their decadent pies to customers. That agency, T + Biscuits, begot the DomiCopter.

When tested, the pizza-toting drone was able to deliver two large pepperoni pizzas four miles in as little as 10 minutes in the town of Guildford, right outside of London, England. The DomiCopter, featuring eight spinning blades, was piloted from land by an expert drone pilot. Nestled safely in a standard red thermal insulation bag, the pizza arrived intact and ready to be devoured.

“If anything, it went quicker than a pizza boy,” Tom Hatton, founder of T + Biscuits told NBC News. The DomiCopter doesn’t have to stop at red lights and doesn’t require flying permits since it flies less than 413 feet off the ground. Tipping the delivery drone is not required.

At present time, the DomiCopter’s weigh limit prohibits the pizza drone from carrying anything more than two large pizzas, but the octocopter is residing at the Domino’s U.K. headquarters, where plans are in the works to change the weight limit.

“Domino’s is an innovative company that is constantly looking at ways to deliver pizzas as quickly as possible,” a Domino’s U.K. spokesperson told NBC.  “It could be great to think that one day pizzas could fly!”

While the DomiCopter — or Pepperdroney as the pizza drone was almost dubbed — has yet to come overseas to the United States, one can only hope that similar technology will soon be developed and available in America. And one can only hope that its fate is exceedingly different than that of the Tacocopter.

Domino’s released a video showing the DomiCopter’s maiden voyage. Watch the dramatic delivery below.
