Alleged white supremacist accused of illegally possessing automatic AK-47

An alleged white supremacist from Manassas is accused of illegally obtaining a fully automatic AK-47.

Prosecutors say 48-year-old Douglas Story has expressed hatred toward minorities and a number of political figures, including President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder.

He was charged in federal court in Alexandria with violating the National Firearms Act by making a firearm for allegedly paying an undercover law enforcement officer to make a semi-automatic AK-47 fully automatic.

A criminal complaint says authorities began investigating him after an informant reported in August that Story had made statements on an Aryan Nation forum that he wanted to buy an AK-47 and modify it so it was automatic. The informant said Story was planning on “ambushing and murdering any law enforcement office that stops him on the street if and when martial law is enacted in the United States,” according to the complaint.

Prosecutors allege that Story has made numerous posts on white supremacy forums. According to the complaint, statements he’s made on those message boards include: “But I think there’s one way Obummer would be proven as a mere mortal…….If someone puts a 30.06 round” into his skull.

Beginning in March, another informant began meeting with Story and told him that a friend — who was actually an undercover officer — could modify an AK-47 for him. On May 9, Story met with the undercover officer, who explained what he would do to Story’s firearm and took the weapon from Story, the complaint says. Story was arrested Wednesday after he received the illegally modified weapon from the officer, authorities said.

Story, a former Virginia Department of Transportation employee, previously made news in April 2010, when a purportedly anti-Islam decal on his pickup truck went viral online. After the image garnered attention, he contacted the Washington Post to say the decal wasn’t racist.

Story no longer works for VDOT, according to an agency spokeswoman.
