Wizards add Sichting to coaching staff

The Wizards made their second new addition to the coaching staff this summer, naming Jerry Sichting as head coach Randy Wittman’s newest assistant.

Sichting, who played 10 seasons in the NBA (winning the 1986 championship with Boston),  had previously been on the sideline under Wittman and with him under Flip Saunders at Minnesota. He was also assistant with Golden State in 2010-11 and Marquette from 2005-08. Last season, he served as the head coach of his alma mater, Martinsville (Ind.) High.

Wittman acknowledged last week that he had been working on one more addition besides Don Newman, who was also added to his staff last month, hired away from San Antonio.

“I’m obviously very familiar with what Jerry will add to our staff and I’m thrilled to have him on board,” Wittman said in a statement. “His experience playing, teaching and evaluating the game will be valuable on the bench and on the practice court as we continue to develop our players and establish this team’s identity.”

The rest of Wittman’s staff includes holdovers from Saunders’ original group: Don Zierden, Sam Cassell, Gene Banks and Ryan Saunders. Joe Connelly also came on last year after Saunders was fired.
