President Trump said Thursday that he expects greater female support in 2020, pointing to disproportionate job growth among women.
“I think we’re going to do better with women now, because you know what? I produced — because women filled more than 60 percent of all new jobs created last year,” Trump said during a campaign rally in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Trump offered the same factoid, but a slightly lower percent during last month’s State of the Union address, declaring that women “filled 58 percent of the new jobs created in the last year.”
Trump insisted Thursday he did well in 2016 with women voters, saying the “fake news” had falsely claimed otherwise. “All of the fake news said he will not do well with women,” Trump said. “We did really well with women.”
In fact, in 2016, Trump took just 41 percent of female votes, according to exit polls, but was able to defeat Hillary Clinton with 52 percent support among men.
One month before the 2016 vote, a leaked “Access Hollywood” hot-mic moment exposed Trump discussing touching women without their consent. Omitting mention of the tape, Trump jeered predictions that had been made that he would perform poorly in 2016, which he did.
