Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke claimed a “better analogy” of President Trump’s comments on Syria could not be found outside a comparison to Nazi Germany.
During an interview on CNN, Wolf Blitzer asked O’Rourke to defend his comments that Trump’s statement on the Kurds was “inspired” by Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.
“Find me a better analogy of another leader of a Western democracy describing all people of one religion as inherently defective, or disqualified, or dangerous,” O’Rourke said. “That’s what the president has done.”
O’Rourke added that Trump’s rallies are similar to those in Nuremberg during the Nazi regime.
“[Trump was] asking four women of color, elected by constituents of Congress, to go back to their home country and having an almost Nuremberg-like rally where people are chanting, ‘Send her back,’” O’Rourke said.
When Blitzer suggested he reconsider the Nazi comparison, O’Rourke stood by it.
“It’s the comparison of last resort. And that’s where we are,” O’Rourke said. “And I don’t mean the last resort politically or last resort in terms of defeating the president in November, but the last resort for this country that is descending into an open racism and intolerance and violence led by the president.”
Last week, Trump said in a press conference that the Kurds had been “cleaned out” of northern Syria, a statement some found insensitive.
