The earthquake-damaged Washington National Cathedral plans to reopen on Nov. 12 but must raise tens of millions of dollars to repair all the damage to the building. The reopening will mark the first time the cathedral has resumed its services since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 23. Three of the four spires of the central tower were damaged during the earthquake. Intricate stonework was shaken loose and fell onto the building’s roof. Major cracks formed in parts of the structure. Cathedral officials said they need to raise $25 million for the restoration and the building’s operations. At least $15 million will be needed for the initial repairs and another $10 million for operations through the end of 2012. – AP
