OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — Ocean Springs businessman Fred Moran will portray explorer Pierre LeMoyne Sieur d’Iberville during the 1699 Landing re-enactment on Saturday.

Local architect Henry Furr has been selected to portray d’Iberville’s brother, Jean Baptist LeMoyne de Bienville.

The annual event commemorates the arrival of d’Iberville on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in April of 1699.

Historians believe d’Iberville landed at what is now the site of the Fort Maurepas replica.

D’Iberville called the first site Biloxi after a friendly tribe of Coast Native Americans.

Later, when New Biloxi was built across the bay in what is present-day Biloxi, the original Fort Maurepas became known as Old Biloxi. That was eventually changed to Ocean Springs to reflect the many springs of mineral water in the town.
