Obama-era Office of Government Ethics chief Walter Shaub resigns after clashes with Trump administration

Walter Shaub, director of the Office of Government Ethics, announced his resignation on Thursday after clashing with the Trump administration.

“The great privilege and honor of my career has been to lead OGE’s staff and the community of ethics officials in the federal executive branch,” Shaub said in a statement posted to social media.

Former President Barack Obama appointed Shaub to his position in 2013. The ethics chief was slated to serve a five-year term, but cut it short and will join the Campaign Legal Center as senior director for ethics on July 19.

In January, Shaub called the president’s plan to step back from his business empire “meaningless” because President Trump stopped short of divesting his assets.

The OGE helped a number of Trump’s wealthy Cabinet appointees, such as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, navigate the process of eliminating their conflicts of interest before joining the administration.
