Comedian Kathy Griffin announced that she has been diagnosed with cancer and will be going into surgery to remove part of her left lung.
Griffin, who has “never smoked,” said via Twitter the cancer is stage 1, adding that she will be “just fine” and doctors are “very optimistic” about her condition.
“Please stay up to date on your medical checkups. It’ll save your life,” she wrote Monday.

Griffin lost her brother to esophageal cancer in 2014. She also shaved her head in solidarity with her sister, who was diagnosed with cancer and died in September 2017. It is not clear what type of cancer Griffin’s sister had.

“Hopefully no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing,” Griffin said. “I should be up and running around as usual in a month or less.”
Griffin added that she expected her condition would be worse were she not vaccinated against COVID-19.
“Of course I am fully vaccinated for Covid. The consequences for being unvaccinated would have been even more serious,” she continued.

Griffin has become an outspoken political commentator in recent years, most notably as a staunch critic of former President Donald Trump.
After receiving public backlash for a promotional photo of herself holding up a fake bloodied Trump head, Griffin began her Laugh Your Head Off Tour in 2018.
