Chef Spike’s fiancee has kitchen anxiety

As the old adage goes: Opposites attract. D.C.-based People magazine contributor Alyssa Shelasky is engaged to chef Spike Mendelsohn.

You may remember Mendelsohn from his appearance on season four of the TV show “Top Chef.” He runs Capitol Hill’s Good Stuff Eatery, is set to open his second restaurant, We The Pizza, and is obviously well-versed in the kitchen. Shelasky is another story.

“Our fire alarm is, like, playing in our house more than my iPod,” Shelasky told Yeas & Nays, detailing some of her kitchen gaffes, which include lighting “mini-fires” and dropping dishes.

“I tried to bake brownies in our toaster oven,” she said. “That was bad.” To cope, three months ago, Shelasky started a blog called Apron Anxiety, in which she writes about her transformation from kitchen klutz to decent cook.

“I would say I’ve cooked a couple of dishes that were delicious, and I’ve cooked a lot of dishes that were pretty bad,” she said. And lucky for her, she has a taste tester with an undiscriminating palate.

“[Mendelsohn will] eat anything I make,” Shelasky said.
