Teenage theme park employee assaulted by guests after asking them to wear masks, police say

A teenage employee at a Sesame Street-inspired theme park underwent surgery for injuries he sustained during an assault related to the park’s mask policy, police said.

The alleged beating occurred at about 5 p.m. on Sunday at Pennsylvania’s Sesame Place amusement park. Police said the 17-year-old employee had approached a couple to remind them about the park’s mandatory mask policy when the male and female guests began to act in a threatening manner, according to WPVI.

“He was aggressively punched by both the female and the male,” said Middletown Township Police Lt. Stephen Forman. Forman said the teenager, who has not been identified, was knocked to the ground by the blows.

“A 17-year-old working at a children’s theme park, trying to earn extra money for school, for college, etc., should not be subjected to a violent physical assault,” he added.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for his injuries, which included surgery for damage to his jaw and teeth sustained during the alleged assault.

Sesame Place said in a statement that it has been working with local law enforcement during the investigation. Police have reportedly identified the vehicle with New York plates that the suspects were driving and are working to produce arrest warrants.

“On Sunday, August 9, a guest assaulted and seriously injured one of our team members,” Sesame Place said in a statement. “We’ve been in close communication with the family of our injured team member, and are hoping for a full and speedy recovery.”
