Joe Scarborough suggests Trump is not a Christian

Joe Scarborough suggested Wednesday President Trump is not a Christian as the president wraps up a series of religious-themed events during his first trip abroad as president.

The host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and former Republican congressman made the comment after the show’s co-host, Mika Brzezinski, teased the next segment on Trump’s meeting with Pope Francis.

“They didn’t actually see eye to eye during the presidential campaign, so what happened during Donald Trump’s meeting today with Pope Francis?” Brzezinski said. “We’ll go through that and what drove them apart in the first place …”

Just before the show cut to the first commercial, Scarborough was heard saying, “Well, the pope’s a Christian.”

Scarborough has been an outspoken critic of Trump, often referring to the Republican as a Democrat due to the president’s history of changing political parties.

During the campaign, the pope said publicly it was “not Christian” to talk about building walls “and not building bridges,” an apparent reference to Trump’s promise to build a wall on the Mexican border. Trump responded by saying it was “disgraceful” for a religious leader to question his faith.

Trump identifies as a Presbyterian.

During his first trip abroad, Trump became the first sitting president to visit holy sites from all three major religions. He started off the trip meeting Muslim leaders in Saudi Arabia and then traveled to Jerusalem, where he became the first sitting president to pray at the Western Wall. He also visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the place designated as where Jesus Christ was cruicified.

Trump met Pope Francis on Wednesday in the Vatican.
