CYCLING Sept. 29: Wednesday night bike ride, Reston, 6 p.m. The Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts host this weekly mountain bike ride around Reston’s trails. It is a moderately paced ride. Oct. 3: Confident City Cycling Class, RFK Stadium, 1 p.m. This on-bike class sponsored by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association covers cycling techniques such as practicing avoidance maneuvers and basic cycling principles. HIKING Sept. 30: Urban Trailers hike, Rosslyn-Georgetown, 6:30 p.m. The Capital Hiking Club will lead this 4.5-mile trek starting in Rossyln, through Georgetown, past “The Exorcist stairs” and ending at the Dupont Circle Metro Station. Sept. 30: Battery Kemble hike, Washington, 10:15 a.m. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club’s Easy Hikers group is leading this 4-5-mile hike on the Battery Kemble and Glover Archbold trails and the C&O Canal Towpath. Info: www.potomacappalachian.org. Oct. 2: Moonlight Hike, C&O Canal Towpath, Great Falls, Md. 8:30 p.m. This is a 4-mile hike starting near Old Angler’s Inn, led by the Capital Hiking Club. INLINE SKATING Oct. 3: Skate clinic, Rock Creek Park, 12:15 p.m. Instructors with the Washington Area Roadskaters give lessons to beginning skaters, followed by a short skate in the park. RUNNING Oct. 3: Freedom’s Run, Harpers Ferry, 7 a.m. The day features a marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and kids fun run. The marathon takes runners through four national parks — Harpers Ferry, C&O Canal, Antietam and the Potomac Heritage Trail. Info: www.freedomsrun.org. Oct. 3: AIDS Walk/Run, Washington, 7 a.m. This is a timed 5K and walk that benefits the Whitman-Walker Clinic. It starts at Freedom Plaza. Info: www.aidswalkwashington.org. TRACK AND FIELD Oct. 4: One-Hour Race Walk/5K/Throwers’ Meet, Falls Church High School, 9 a.m. The Potomac Valley Track Club is hosting the meet, which includes a one-hour racewalk, 5K track run, and events in hammer, shot, discus, javelin and weight. TRIATHLON Oct. 11: Richmond Sprint Triathlon, Richmond, 8 a.m. This is a 400-meter pool swim, 20K bike and 5K run and is a fundraiser for the Massey Cancer center at Virginia Commonwealth University.
