Six men serving time at a federal prison in Georgia are looking at longer sentences after being charged with exposing themselves to women working at the facility.
The six male inmates were charged in Georgia’s Southern District Court Wednesday with misdemeanor public indecency. They will face another 12 months behind bars plus supervised release and fines for showing their genitalia to staff at the Federal Correctional Institution Jesup in southeast Georgia, according to prosecutors.
The men were in prison after being convicted of crimes like possession of a firearm and drug distribution.
“These prosecutions should send a message to all inmates that this reprehensible behavior will not be tolerated – and will result in more time behind bars,” Bobby L. Christine, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, said in a statement.
Chris Hacker, special agent in charge of FBI Atlanta, said female prison staff endure an “unacceptable” amount of similar incidents each year.
In 2018, women working in federal prisons reported 1,268 incidents in which an inmate exposed himself or herself to the employee. That number has increased over the past couple years from 850 in 2016 and 1,000 in 2017.
