The final leg of the Route 234 widening project in Prince William County opened to traffic Wednesday afternoon, completing an $87 million endeavor that began in 1993.
In all, the project added two lanes, one in each direction, to a 13-mile stretch of Route 234, which now features four lanes between Interstate 66 and I-95 in Prince William, one of the region’s fastest-growing areas.
The section of Route 234 that opened Monday stretches 3.2 miles from Country Club Drive to Eclipse Drive.
The widening work is the second major project to finish in Prince William County recently. Last month the Virginia Department of Transportation opened four new lanes (one high-occupancy lane and one regular lane in each direction) on I-66 between Route 234 Business and the Route 234 Bypass.
Construction will begin in the spring to extend the additional lanes on I-66 from the Route 234 Bypass to Route 29 in Gainesville.
